Welcome

Dear Members

It is both a privilege and a pleasure to be elected as the President of the Isle of Man Insurance and Financial Services Institute for the 2012/2013 session.

As a General Insurance member of our institute, my principal objective is to provide more structured support for the General Insurance members in the Isle of Man. Our PFS members, including those within the Pensions and Life sectors, currently enjoy a structured program of events and we are looking to replicate this appropriately for our General Insurance members.

Our focus will continue to be on education and we aim to give as much help and assistance as possible to our members who are taking their professional exams.  Over the coming year, we will strive to provide a varied and interesting programme of quality lectures, seminars and workshops on topical and technical subjects, with a focus on RDR gap fill.  In addition, as IFSI members you can access the Insurance Institute of London's podcasts to help keep up-to-date - simply click here and enter your CII PIN details.

During 2012/2013 we will also continue to deliver Discover Risk and Discover Fortunes to both school and college students.   These were well received previously and I would particularly like to thank Laura Critchley and Ciara Doherty, and also their respective employers Friends Provident International and Aon Insurance Managers (Isle of Man) Limited, for their ongoing assistance and support.

Social events are a great forum for networking and for raising much needed funds for charity.  Along with raising funds for the Insurance Charities, both myself and Oriana Hills (Deputy President) are keen to support Age Isle of Man this year.  Age Isle of Man provides tailored support and services for people living on this Island including information and advice, the CHAT bus, Lunch Clubs, Activity Clubs and Lifelong Learning Centres.  You can find out more about why Oriana and I chose this charity by visiting:  http://www.ageconcerniom.com/.

I am extremely fortunate to have the support of Oriana and an experienced and dedicated Council.  This year I am particularly pleased to welcome a number of new Council members, which will allow our institute to continue to develop and thrive.

I wish you all every success both personally and professionally during 2012/2013.

Karen Clark, BA, ACSI, DipCII
2012-13 President
ar I look forward to working with you all to further increase awareness of the relevance of the CII and its extended family, which includes financial advisory services, general insurance intermediaries, insurance companies, captive insurance companies, banks and life companies, and to support our members within the wider financial services community to increase and maintain professional standards.

2012 is a big year for the CII, as its centenary year; it is also the 25th anniversary of the Isle of Man Institute. The 2012 annual dinner promises to be an even more special occasion as a result and I know of no other institute event that sells out as quickly as ours, which is a testament to the Isle of Man.

I represented the Institute recently at the Bankers Dinner for the first time in my capacity as President. Guest speaker Angela Knight (CEO BBA) very eloquently explained the many challenges heading not just their way, but to all of us in the financial services arena.  I was reminded of the fact that the CII, as one of the largest recognised professional bodies, has a huge responsibility to  meet the educational challenges that result as regulators wrestle with the implications of issues such as RDR, Solvency II, IMD (mark 2), and the Bribery Act.

This year we will be ensuring we pay close attention to the educational requirements of members by listening to what they want, whilst working to attract as many new members as possible to join us as the professional representative body of choice. The CII and your local institute can help through its comprehensive set of exams, its CPD regime and its ability to influence business leaders and work with regulators. This is your institute and you can get a lot out of it – if you want to!

I also look forward to working with the representatives of the Island’s other professional bodies in regularly providing wide-ranging and relevant CPD events.

Finally I would like to say again thank you to all council members that have stayed on board to support Deputy President Karen Clark and myself this year, and express how pleased we are about the return of founding council member Christine Crowther and the addition of John Hockney, Belinda Ayres, Tristen Bell and Darren Mills.  It really is a privilege to represent the local institute as president this year and to be involved with such a conscientious and motivated group of professionals.
