Lunchtime Lecture: The Importance of What You Don't Know - Taming Unconscious Bias in Your Business and slaying the beast that is Imposter Syndrome

Wednesday, 28 March 2018
12:30 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)
    • Julie R Goddard, MSc, Woodglade Consulting

Overview:

Our unconscious mind is amazing, it filters vast amounts of overwhelming data through the use of shortcuts to help us make decisions. We couldn’t function without this help. However, we do need to be aware of how the subconscious filters and arrives at decisions because a lot of the time it can just be plain wrong!

These shortcuts, or heuristics, that our brain employs are based on our background, cultural upbringing and personal experiences and operate at an instinctive, not analytical level. This can lead to dubious hiring decisions, costly mistakes in the boardroom and self-sabotaging thought processes which limit the fruition of our highest potential.

We will examine ways to control the impact of Unconscious Bias, as well as techniques to help you identify and master the unconscious brain’s short fallings - leaving you free to successfully pursue your goals.

Learning Outcomes:

It is intended that those attending will at completion gain an understanding of:

  1. How our brain works simultaneously on two levels and by our very nature of being human, we all fall prey to Unconscious Bias.

  2. An overview of cognitive and social biases including, confirmation bias, attribution error and the halo and horns effect.

  3. The common problems that arise because of this and how to avoid them

  4. How to identify and overcome Imposter Syndrome.
