Get To Know Your Council - August

Name: Clare Jermy

Occupation/Industry Experience:
Group Regulatory Reporting Officer at PIB Group, based in Norwich

How long have you been on the Insurance Institute of Norwich’s Council?

Two years - I was initially invited to join as part of the New Professional’s Group (“NPG”) sub-committee, and loved it so much, I became part of the Council within a couple of months.

What is your role, and what does it involve?

I’ve been on the NPG sub-committee for nearly two years, where we arrange frequent events which are aimed at people new to the industry. Events range from formal CPD sessions, for example last year; we held a seminar on Insurance Mediation, to more relaxed affairs such as a summer barbeque. The majority of the events are social, and a way for local insurance professionals to get to know one another. We quite often arrange team building or networking events in Norwich, which have included a Ghost Walk, Cryptic Escape Room and tubing at the local snowsports club.

I’ve also recently become Treasurer and help manage the Insurance Institute of Norwich’s accounts.

Why did you decide to join the Council?

I wanted to part of a team that support people in the insurance industry and strive to make a difference. I was really inspired by the work that goes on for the Insurance Charities, who help people in the industry requiring additional support, for example with their finances or mental health. The Council also provide a huge amount of CPD, learning and development opportunities for members, which is not only important to help ensure customers receive the best service from knowledgeable experts, but helps meet minimum industry training requirements. Of course, one of the main reasons I joined was to help show the ‘fun’ element of working in insurance. A huge part of working in the industry is building relationships and both the NII’s NPG and Social Secretary help members network and have fun whilst doing it!

What are you most looking forward in the forthcoming year on the Council?

It’s going to be a very different year for all of us following the COVID19 outbreak, and certainly more challenging to hold meetings or networking sessions! It’s great that technology can help bridge that gap, and we’ve held more virtual CPD and wellbeing sessions than ever (and even now hold our Council meetings virtually). It’s a whole new way of doing things, but it goes to show that you can make it work!

Tell us one unusual fact about yourself

I won an art competition when I was 10 years’ old and got to reopen the local food hall after it burnt down. For those of you in and around Norfolk, you might know the food hall as part of the “world’s largest village store,” Roys of Wroxham!
