WEBINAR: An Introduction to Business Interruption Insurances

The course will be online, via Zoom, in 2 sessions of about 3½ hours each. The second session will build upon the first.

Session 1 will run on Thursday 24th September from 9:30 - 13:00.

Session 2 will run on Friday 25th September from 9:30-13:00.

The aim of this course is to provide a comprehensive explanation of the key elements of the BI policy and of how BI works in practice. We shall look at covers and policy benefits, and work on guiding clients on Sums Insured, maximum indemnity periods, key policy clauses and claims.

After this course, participants should have a strong understanding of the major aspects of Business Interruption Insurance, to assist in seizing the sales initiative, correctly assessing clients’ needs, arranging adequate cover for them and driving forward their claims. The course is ideal for beginners or anyone with some experience in Business Interruption insurances. SME level is fine.

  • To raise understanding of BI covers, principles & the policy formula
  • To help attack for new, profitable business,
  • underwrite BI covers and resolve BI claims
  • To identify common pitfalls such as:
  • Short maximum indemnity periods,
  • Low sums insured, uninsured wages & salaries
  • Rates of Gross Profit and Turnover covers
  • Property away from Premises
  • Insufficient policy extensions & clauses - and so
  • Improve the outcomes of Sales and Claims

About the Trainer

Rod Smith, is a fellow of the chartered insurance institute and of the chartered institute of loss adjusters. Since 1974, he has assisted insurers, underwriters, brokers and their clients with property, BI and casualty claims in the UK and abroad. He uses his own real-life, practical examples of covers and claims he has adjusted to show how business interruption really works.

For over 25 years, Rod has trained for the CII in insurance law, business interruption, property covers and claims across the UK and in Ireland, in France, in Hong Kong, Turkmenistan, Morocco, Malta, Saudi Arabia and the Emirates. He lives in Bristol.
