Learning objectives

By the end of this course, the attendees will be able to

  • Explain the legal position relating to sale of goods and to carriage of goods

  • Explain and apply the key provisions of the Marine Insurance Act, as amended by the Insurance Act 2015 to Cargo and Goods in Transit risks

  • Describe the key risk features of both cargo and goods in transit risks and rating criteria

  • Explain the provisions of the Institute Cargo Clauses 1/1/09 and a standard market Goods in Transit wording

  • Analyse the need for appropriate additional clauses which can be added to standard wordings and when they would be used

  • Explain the handling and adjustment of claims and recoveries for both cargo and goods in transit.

  • How goods are bought and sold domestically and internationally

  • How are goods transported

  • What legal and contractual regimes cover the liability of carriers of all types

  • What other parties might be involved and what will their exposures be (freight forwarders etc.)

  • What are the underwriters thinking about (or should be thinking about)?

  • What is the basic cover available for cargo risks and how can it be amended?

  • What does a typical goods in transit policy cover and what amendments can be made?

  • How are claims and recoveries handled in both cargo and goods in transit insurance?
