This fun and interactive seminar will provide an insight into the fundamental principles of the law of torts relating to the various situations likely to be encountered by insurance professionals, especially those involved in claims handling. It is also aimed at those who may need a knowledge of the law of torts for their CII exams.

The main topic areas will include:

  • Negligence: the duty of care, breach of duty, causation and remoteness
  • Occupiers’ liability
  • Product liability
  • Employers’ liability
  • General defences and remedies in the law of torts

There will be insurance related scenarios with role play used throughout to aid learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • recognise the key legal principles of the law of torts typically encountered by those involved in the claims chain in the insurance industry
  • understand the practical application of the key principles of law and how case law can be used to persuade a third party or a customer/client
  • identify areas of the law of torts that are particularly contentious and how to develop arguments when dealing with cases where these areas may arise

The Trainer

Jeff Heasman holds a bachelors degree in law from the University of Glamorgan and a master of laws degree from Swansea University. He spent many years in practice as a litigation executive, dealing with cases up to and including the Court of Appeal in London and as a senior liability adjuster at Crawford and Company he dealt with insurance claims arising from many worldwide jurisdictions.

A former Dean of the Faculty of Law and lecturer in law of torts at Cavendish University in Zambia, he now provides training in insurance law and practice to prestigious organisations and companies throught the world. He maintains a close connection to the international legal profession, working as a consultant in insurance law to a law firm based in Istanbul, Turkey.
