Wednesday, 09 March 2022
6:00 pm – 9:00 pm (UK time)

We're challenging ourselves and members to walk across red hot coals to raise money for the Insurance Charities. If you fancy a mental challenge to start 2022 come and join our President and members for this rare experience.

We are asking for a £20 contribution to take part for which everyone taking part will receive an Event t-shirt and Digital picture. We ask everyone taking part to aim for a target fundraising amount of £100.

We will be using the following fundraising page: https://wonderful.org/fundraisers/419

Even if you don't fancy taking part, we would love people to support the brave souls who are, so please come along to enjoy the spectacle!

FAQs

What is a Firewalk?
Participants will undergo training of around one hour. When the fire has burned to red-hot embers it is raked level and prepared for the walk. Participants go to the fire, remove their footwear and one by one are invited to walk on the coals.

Is Firewalking Dangerous?
The event is being run by experienced company UK Firewalk who have never had anyone who has required medical attention after a public, corporate or charity fire walks. Their main priority is the safety of our walkers and we ensure this with a comprehensive risk assessment prior to the event. There is always a chance of a blister and if there were no risks, where would be the accomplishment of walking on fire be?

Is it a trick?
No - the fire is very real. The embers will be glowing red-hot and we can often measure the temperature at around 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. You will have bare feet.

So will it hurt?
The sensation is described by some as walking on eggshells, and others as walking on hot sand. Each walker has his or her own experience. We haven't known walkers to experience pain and when the opportunity arises many will walk across the coals more than once.

Who are we raising money for?
The Insurance Charities. Every year the Insurance Institute of Leeds raises money for this great charity who support current and former insurance employees in a myriad of ways. Last year they awarded over £912k to people in need.

The event is kindly being sponsored by Joe Henderson of Attis Insurance Brokers, who will be covering the cost of the event so all money raised can go directly to our charity.
