Lloyd's Masterclass: Emerging Risks

Lloyd's of London is visiting Manchester in February for an insightful afternoon of CPD and networking!

This masterclass will provide you with the chance to hear from four senior Lloyd's professionals, and gain a unique perspective into our industry's premier market place. Each speaker will focus on the latest trends and issues affecting Lloyd's and our industry as a whole.

The masterclass is free of charge to attend, and includes a light networking lunch during the registration period.

Programme and learning objectives

12.00 - 12.45pm: Refreshments and lunch

Session 1: Demystifying Lloyd’s – a general introduction (Keith Stern)

By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- describe a brief history of the Lloyd’s market
- have a basic knowledge of how Lloyd’s is constituted
- explain how Lloyd’s conducts business in the UK and around the world
- acknowledge Lloyd’s ratings, financial results and reserves.

Session 2: Emerging Risks (Nick Beecroft)

By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- describe how Lloyd’s defines and manages emerging risks
- have insight in to what emerging risks are thought to be most significant for the Lloyd’s market
- understand some of the major trends that are influencing the emergence of new and uncertain risks

Session 3: What Lloyd’s expects from Coverholders and a run-through of the application process (Katie Day)

By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- What Lloyd’s expects from coverholders
- The Lloyd’s coverholder application process
- How to avoid the common mistakes when submitting an application/additional requests
- The centralised annual compliance project

Session 4: A day in the life of a Lloyd’s broker (Matthew Clatworthy)

By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- Better understand the methodology of placing a risks into Lloyd’s
- Understand why it is sometimes difficult to communicate with a Lloyd’s Broker
- Understand why a Lloyd’s broker does not cover the whole Market with a risk
- Understand why they should manage their Lloyd’s broker relationships

Speaker biographies

Keith Stern
Keith originally practised as an accountant prior to joining Lloyd's over 25 years ago. Following ten years in Australia as Lloyd's Country Manager, and three years as Regional Head for Asia-Pacific, Keith returned to the UK in July 2010 to take up a new position as Lloyd's Regional Manager for UK and Ireland. Keith supports the business development activities of Lloyd's Managing Agents and Brokers in London and promotes the Lloyd’s brand in the UK regional market. He is a director of both Lloyd’s Ireland Ltd and the MGAA (Managing General Agents’ Association).

Nick Beecroft
Nick’s team is responsible for research and scenario development concerning underwriting risks which are highly uncertain, yet which could generate major losses. Nick joined Lloyd’s at the start of 2014. He previously worked at Catlin Group as a project manager in business change. Before joining the insurance sector Nick served for 12 years as an Intelligence Officer in the Royal Air Force. Appointments included secondment to central government in a counter-terrorism role and attachment to the British Army on deployed operations with responsibility for operational planning and mentoring of local forces. He recently completed a MSc in International Security and Global Governance.

Katie Day
Katie is an Executive within the Delegated Authorities Team at Lloyd’s. She started her insurance career 7 and half years ago as a Team Administrator within the Delegated Authorities Team at Lloyd’s. She now manages the coverholder application process and is responsible for ensuring the process works efficiently, whilst continually reviewing and implementing any changes to the process. At the end of 2015 Katie has approved over 300 coverholder applications.

Matthew Clatworthy
Matt started his working life in the late 1980’s as a box boy for Alan Jackson and moved onto become a claims and then placing Broker for David Gyngell and Company (DG575) specialising in Aviation London Market Excess of Loss Reinsurance (LMX). After the uncertainty of the early 1990’s Matt moved into retail commercial broking, buying and selling 3 brokerages before becoming Senior Sales Manager for Broker Network in 2005. Having assisted in the growth and subsequent sale to Towergate Matt moved on to help set up and run a Residential Property Owners (RPO) U/W agency and reference provider owned by the ECIC. Matt returned into the Lloyd’s Market as Senior Broker Developer for Miles Smith in 2008, moving to his current Sales Director’s role in Compass London Markets and Key Account Director for Compass Network, part of A J Gallagher, in 2013.
