Failure mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries - Forensic scientists view By Simon Munford - Hawkins Forensic Scientists Date - Tuesday 12th June 2018 12.15 for 12.30 start (Please note that this event is 1-hour duration) Venue: Sir Humphries Cripps Pavilion, Old Northamptonians Billing Road, Northampton NN1 5RX Event Overview This presentation will cover the construction, use and safety features of lithium-ion batteries. It will then explore the various failure mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries ranging from ‘safe’ failures to catastrophic failures, which can result in fires and explosions. The recent lithium-ion battery issues with Tesla cars and Samsung mobile telephones will also be examined. The presentation will conclude with a short section on the investigation of lithium-ion battery fires and what is expected to be seen after a fire. The Learning Objectives for this session are After the presentation, the audience will have a better understanding of how lithium-ion batteries work, how and why fires occur, what can be done to prevent them and the expected results of an investigation About the speaker Simon Munford has been an associate at Hawkins for just under five years. He has an MA and MEng in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge and is a member of the IET. At Hawkins, Simon specialises in fire and explosion investigation and investigation into electrical and electronic failures.
