Perth and Dundee Insurance Institute Claims Club is delighted to be hosting a technical insurance event on Freight Liability Insurance. This is a CPD event and is open to all CII members and non members too.

Our speaker, David Roome, graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a Risk Management BA (Hons) degree in 2002. David started working at NMU as an assistant underwriter in October that year and was involved in freight/haulage and marine cargo/stock throughput classes. Promoted to underwriter in 2005 David’s responsibilities included freight/haulage, marine cargo/stock throughput and engineering classes. David was appointed as development underwriter in 2013 adding terrorism and motorsport lines to his responsibilities.

Since the 1800s, legislation has allowed carriers and other bailees for reward to limit their liability for loss of or damage to goods in their care custody and control; but over time the burden of proof has shifted increasingly to the benefit of the goods owner.

More recently, carriers and logistics operators have faced ever more burdensome contractual terms being imposed on them by their larger, more demanding customers.

Evolution of Freight Liability Insurance has been significant in recent years and covers many topics, from culture change in cargo owners to losses, everything must be written down, incorporation of contract conditions, increased competition in the traction service sector and increased litigation, to name a few. David will provide an insightful view in this specialist area of insurance with focus on claims.
