Introduction to the Discover Risk ‘game’.

Jonathan Clark – Deputy President (President from AGM on 18/07/2018)

Theme for his Presidency will be ‘A United Profession’. Need to respect diversity in all aspects, but also ensure teamwork and professionalism in everything the CII and members do.

Sian Fisher – CEO

2017 was a year of progress, towards ‘building public trust in a united profession’. She presented the ‘Trust Index, and ways of measuring progress (confidence, price, loyalty, protection, ease). Development in learning and assessment and also increase in membership numbers has been more pronounced on the PFS side. The CII is the awarding body for all insurance related qualifications, but a lot of these are for PFS members. All learning and work of the CII/LI’s has to be Relevant, Modern and Diverse, and all of the membership has to be Engaged.

Keith Richards - MD for Engagement (and CEO of PFS).

The CII is a professional body in evolution. Engagement not only with members but also externally with Government, Regulators, Policy makers, FCA DWP, Pensions Regulator, MOJ, HM Treasury etc and also the Public. PFS members involved in a significant amount of pro bono work. Discover Fortunes (PFS equivalent of Discover Risk). Aspiration to have access to all schools to promote both DR/DF, need LI’s to help to deliver these locally. PFS Conference in 2017 very successful with ca. 22,000 attendees.

Lee Travis - Partnerships and Member Engagement Director.

Network must evolve to stay relevant to all members. Updated CPD database will be available from July with ca. 260 topics. There will be 7 trial events between September and December from the centralised CPD offering. Nearest trial event to Sheffield will be Leeds or Manchester. “LI’s are the key to delivering the CII’s objectives”.

Discuss ‘what is an engaged membership’, ‘how can LI’s better engage with members locally’, ‘what should be CII’s role in developing further member engagement’

Mark Hutchinson – Societies and Member Marketing Director

Need to play to ‘our’ strengths. CII is the award body, with high professional standards, need to improve public trust must be at the core of activities. The CII has a diverse membership but a weak level of engagement, who don’t see the relevance of membership and/or its qualifications. Need to stress that members need the qualifications ‘to become a professional’ but they need engagement and CPD ‘to be a professional’.

The membership strategy needs to be ‘relevant and engaging’, ‘events tailored to the membership’, ‘insights from practitioners’, ‘demonstrate the relevance to the wider community’ and ‘increase membership overall to improve standards’. The proposition is to have a sector level professional body, code of ethics and designations per sector, topical and focused CPD, tailored web content and good practice guidance.

Grant Scott – Engagement Ambassador

He gave some good practice examples from some LI’s. The Representative Council (its composition, roles, responsibilities and functions) is being reviewed. Views of all LI’s will be sought and feedback should be forwarded to the area representatives and/or Grant Scott.

Breakout session

Discuss good practice, innovation (segmentation, qualifications, young professionals etc), how to celebrate success, and working with the CII (RMMs, Representative Council, area representatives, Network News, etc).

Matthew Connell – Policy and Public Affairs Director

More detailed Introduction to the Trust Index. The CII Charter requires it ‘to secure and justify the confidence of the public’.

Simon Graham – Learning and Assessment Director

We need to ensure that we have the ‘learning products for tomorrow’s needs and the changing educational practices’. There will be a Revison Mate app, and more online texts, with less reliance on textbooks. ProctorU (a remote invigilated exam arrangement with webcam monitoring to allow students to take an exam nearer to where they live/work) is being trialled with overseas students especially in remote areas.

CII Service awards - Sheffield Recognition

The Awards Ceremony is always a highlight of this event and this year 15 Local Institute members were recognized for the service. We'd like to congratulate all of this years winner and with particular focus on our very own Bill Padley!

Bill (photo below, right) was a well-deserved recipient of a Distinguished Service Award having given over 30 years service to Sheffield Institute and therefore the Sheffield Industry. Thank you Bill.
