Lunchtime CPD - Older Drivers & the Older Drivers Taskforce

Thistle Hotel
Wednesday, 11 January 2017
12:30 pm – 2:00 pm (UK time)

The Older Drivers Forum was created in June 2013 due to the increase in the number of incidents on our roads involving the older age group. The Forum is a partnership approach with many organisations to give help and support to the mature driver to allow them to carry on driving safely for longer and not become complacent about their ability to drive. The Forum also gives advice on how to remain safe as well as when drivers should retire from driving.

Rob has 28 years of experience in Roads Policing and is a Category A Senior Investigating Officer for Road Death investigations and has also won national awards for his work with Older Drivers. Rob also sits on the National Older Drivers Task Force and chairs one of the committees for self-help and support.

Accidents involving older drivers, often due to poor eyesight or mobility, is a big issue and one that does not always get the same level of attention or focus attributed to younger drivers. However there has been recently more publicity around this issue due to some high profile cases such as the one involving an elderly driver crashing into a queue of schoolchildren. Commercially these claims also have a big impact on insurers results which is why premiums have been rising rapidly for this age demographic and it feels as though more needs to be done to address this issue rather than just to keep increasing premiums.

His talk will explain why he set up the Forum, what are the current rules and status of older drivers as well as what he is doing in Hampshire and other areas which is shown to be making a difference. Rob will also give an overview of the Older Drivers Task Force and recent recommendations presented to the government.
