Annual Report of Council 2021-2022

Paul Tunnell, President

This year has been both difficult and challenging, and yet easy at the same time, with the demands of Covid-19 have made on our events.

Our Council team have once again stepped up a gear and produced what I consider an outstanding offering for social and CPD events under the circumstances, embracing zoom (other online platforms are available), with special mention to Angela Bond, providing our educational support.

We have seen issues raised questioning the efficiency and transparency of the inner sanctum at Albermanbury, which has resulted in several working groups overseeing their functions. The network conference was once again held over zoom, and there were difficulties in registering, but the recordings were made available.

We managed to hold my Presidents reception and prize presentation as a face to face event at South Nutfield, with the prizewinners, their guests and council enjoying first class surroundings and an excellent evening

I can confirm that our Area Marketing Manager Julie Hicks commended us on exceeding our target for a “good” rating for CPD in our annual appraisal, which was largely due to Julie Bradley’s hard work as secretary.

The CII is moving forward rapidly following the departure of CEO Sian Fisher who has completed her mandated 5 year road map, completing her aims and objectives in modernising the CII and gaining public trust. We await news of her successor

I was thrilled to be able to be able to hold our Annual Dinner as a face to face event once again. Unfortunately, our usual venue, Selsdon Park Hotel, is going through a period of change, and currently closed, so a change of venue was arranged to the Croydon Aerodrome Hotel. The room being smaller than we are used to, meant numbers were capped at 100, and some people were turned away once we were full. The evening was great, with a real buzz of people talking to each other and enjoying each other’s company. It was good to see more Young Professionals” attending. The entertainment was scaled back and provided by a table magician. Thanks to Maria for organising the event, and to Julie and others for their hard work on the charity collection. Including the auction and heads & tails, we raised over £500. This will go to the insurance charities with matched fundraising to my chosen charity, and the heads and tails to the Ukrainian appeal.

I look forward to serving you for another year, and aim to focus on the continuing development our Young Professional Group in this Presidential year.

I believe that we are turning a corner on all fronts and moving forward rapidly.

Maria Self, Deputy President

Ongoing support provided to President

Organised Presidents/Prize Winners Reception on 11 November2021 at Nutfield Priory where we awarded prizes to the candidates who achieved top marks in their PFS, ACII, Dip CII & Cert CII qualifications. Prize winners attended a 3 course dinner together with a guest. The event was also attended by members of Council, Julie Hicks our CII RMM & guests from Pavilion Recruitment & Plan Insurance.

Julie Bradley, Secretary

I have prepared and produced the Agendas and subsequent Minutes for all the Council meetings we have run during the course of the presidential year. I have submitted all necessary returns to the CII within required timescales.

Maria Self, Dinner Secretary

Having not been able to hold our 2021 Annual Dinner due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I have been delighted to organise our 2022 Dinner which was held on 4 March at the Aerodrome Hotel, Croydon. This Black tie event was attended by 90 guests with tables hosted by Allianz Broker Markets, Direct Line Group, Zurich Insurance, Pavilion Recruitment, Cobra/PIB, Plan Insurance, Grout Insurance, Brownhill Insurance and Mclarens Loss Adjusters. We also had a table of Young Professionals & a table of Council members. A charity raffle for the Insurance Charities was held in which we raised over £500. Entertainment was provided by Kris Krendo, magician & we also had a Salsa dance performance from SalsaBug. A great night was had by all!

Angela Bond, Education Secretary

I have continued to offer my support & advice to Our President and Council & look forward to the new Presidential year.

As well as running our own, we have collaborated throughout the year with our neighboring institutes in the Southern region to offer an additional comprehensive CPD programme.

With advice and assistance from Council and President – Paul Tunnell, the NDII has provided 30 hours of structured CPD this Presidential year of 2021/2022.

Due to Covid -19 we have adapted and have presented these sessions virtually. We have provided CPD for: Technical, Market Knowledge, Revision and Soft Skills.

Matt Arnell, Membership Secretary

My summary of the year is as follows:

There is currently no December 2021 results available, the latest is November 2021. I’ve therefore based my comparisons on January 2021 to November 2021. Please let me know if you want me to make a different comparison e.g. November 2020 to November 2021

Reviewing the membership data for 2021 we started off in January with a total membership figure of 1,823 and the final count at the end of November 2021 is 1,735 – losing a total of 88. This is smaller than the previous years’ reduction of 150.

GI Members FS Members

Jan 21 – 1,451 372

Nov 21 – 1,387 348

(-64) (-24)

GI has lost around 4.5% and FS just over 6%

Indicators for numbers decreasing tends to be for lapses. There are also resignations but it continues to be mainly lapses for ordinary members.

Alan Wheat, Insurance Charities

Due to Covid restrictions over the last year and associated restrictions on home visits, activity relating to Insurance Charities (IS) has been limited to cascading Insurance Charities news and updates (as provided by IS) to the wider Council for onwards distribution. This included raising awareness on the Insurance Charities Awareness week in 2021.

Jess Miles, Marketing Officer

Since our last AGM was held, we have seen more people engaging with our page on LinkedIn and have almost doubled in followers (117 in 2020 v 220 in 2022) which is great news and means we are reaching a lot more people than before! I was able to pull an excel report from linked in which gives a good insight in to the location of people engaging with our posts (highlighting Redhill & Croydon as our biggest audience), along with Job function (whether from Finance, Sales etc) and Industries.

As always, a big thank you to everyone for the continued support in sharing & helping expand our member audience. The wheels are in motion to start a Facebook and potential Instagram page in which we can share our events for the NDII which will hopefully boost our social media presence for 2022.

Annual Report of Council 2021

President

Wow, what a year this has been, taking over the reins just as the first lockdown was hitting us – could we have a face to face meet for AGM – no, so this odd thing called Zoom popped into our lives, and despite our best efforts to meet up, will remain so for the foreseeable future. Now it almost seems normality to have online meetings, and my IT skills have had to improve exponentially. My Presidents reception was postponed to October, then March and now the future date is yet to be set. I have had little recourse to the President role, but have presided over nearly all of our education and social online events. Thanks to the hard-working efforts of our Council members, we have managed to put on a full programme of events ranging from keep fit to

Deputy President

The Covid 19 pandemic has seriously impacted many of the things we would normally do and offer to our members and also the way in which we offer them but Council have really stepped up to the challenge. I am personally very proud of this.

It has been key that we continue to offer as much educational/CPD events as possible & this moved online very quickly. A big thank you to our Education Secretary, Angela Bond for all her efforts in this space.

Education Secretary – Angela Bond

I have continued to offer my support & advice to Our President and Council & look forward to a safe & bright 2021/22 Presidential year.

With advice and assistance from Council and President – Paul Tunnell, the NDII has provided 28.5 hours of structured CPD this Presidential year of 2020/2021.

Due to Covid -19 we have adapted and have presented these sessions virtually. We have provided CPD for: Technical, Market Knowledge, Revision and Soft Skills.

In addition, for 2021 we are also proactively collaborating with our neighboring Institutes in the Southern Region in creating a further CPD programme accessible for all members across the South East. These institutes include Mid Kent, Sussex and Guernsey.

Administrator – Paul Tunnell

This year has been very different, with the online meetings at first hastily arranged and some not going to plan, but as time wore on, skills improved and a full programme of events followed, with the website updates and eflyers sent, there has still been quite a bit to do, but even with some tight timescales, have got everything up and running.

Secretary – Julie Bradley

I have prepared and produced the Agendas and subsequent Minutes for all the Council meetings we have run during the course of the year. I have submitted all necessary returns to the CII within required timescales.

Matt Arnell - Membership Secretary

The December 2020 results only show the total CII numbers and there are no splits available per institute. I have therefore had to base my comparisons on January 2020 to January 2021.

Reviewing the membership data for 2020 we started off in January with total a total membership figure of 1,973 and the final count at the start of January 2020 is 1,823 – losing a total of 150. This is larger than the previous years’ reduction of 62

GI Members FS Members

Jan 20 – 1,576 397

Jan 21 – 1,451 372

(-125) (-25)

GI has lost nearly 8% and FS just over 6%

Indicators for numbers decreasing tends to be for lapses. There are also resignations but it continues to be mainly lapses for ordinary members.

Alan Wheat - Insurance Charities

Whilst there have been no applicant home visits in the last presidential year (due to Covid 19 restrictions), I have tried to keep Council up to date with regards to the Insurance Charities activities/initiatives. These have included the following:

  • Promotion of the Insurance Charities Awareness Week (22nd – 26th June)
  • Confirmation of 2019/20 £1.7m donation to assist with day to day hardship
  • Promotion of the Annual Golf Tournament
  • Advertising Trustee vacancy (Board & Committee member)
  • Promotion of Alzhiemers Support Initiative
  • Promotion of the ‘Free Domestic Abuse Toolkit’
  • Promotion of MIND Charity Initiative
  • Raising awareness of the Insurance Charities Myth Buster
  • Promotion of Funding that is available for training during the pandemic
  • Raising awareness of the HR Professionals web page
  • Promotion of the Insurance Charities Endurance Karting Event

Dinner Secretary – Maria Self

We were able to hold our 2020 Dinner just a few week before the UK went into lockdown in March.

We would normally have held a Presidents reception in the autumn but this was not possible due to the Covid 19 pandemic nor have we been able to hold our 2021 in March 2021. We now look forward to holding our next annual Dinner in 2021 & being able to celebrate with our Members and their guests at that time.

Jess Miles - Marketing Officer

This year has been a tough one but we have persevered and continued to deliver a fantastic range of sessions to our members – a special thanks to our Angela our Education Secretary – all the while adapting to the ‘new normal’, which has at times been trying for us all.

We have grown in terms of our social media presence with more people following on our LI page, along with a steady stream of engagement.

A big thank you to everyone for the continued support in sharing & helping expand our member audience. Something I previously mentioned and would like to revisit/ think about at a later date, the possibility of a Facebook & Instagram page for the NDII which will hopefully boost our social media presence for 2021.

Orion Russell - Social Secretary

We have begun to hold some events online where we can and there appears to be some demand for it. We have held an online High Intensity Interval Training session with a Personal Trainer. We have also now held two yoga sessions which appear to go down quite well.

I am looking to hold a dance session in April and we are thinking of more events that could be run over the next year, with a view of holding the yoga events semi regularly.

Any suggestions on what events people would like to see would be greatly appreciated!

Treasurer – Paul Tunnell

This year has been very different, with all the online learning and not face to face events, so we have seen a large reduction in our outgoings, and with lockdown continuing I suspect that we will see a similar reduction next year. CII also suspect that may be the case and have requested our support by returning a proportion of our Annual Grant to them to reduce their substantial operating loss. Supporting this motion was a difficult decision as at the end of the day, the Grant we receive is from members subscriptions, but seeing the bigger picture, supporting CII in this way to go on and thrive will be in all of our best interests in the longer term. We do hope that you understand the reasons and will continue to support us. It will not leave us short of funds, and we will continue to provide the full and varied educational and social programme as before.
