Plain English for insurance professionals

Little training, if any, is devoted towards professional communication skills. However, the emails, letters and reports produced by a company are its public face and impressions are formed on the basis of those documents. Because communication skills are often learnt ‘on the job’, bad habits are engrained in to new generations of employees.

The need to use clear and transparent language is increasingly becoming an issue in the insurance industry. The FCA Thematic Reviews of 2013 emphasise the need for information to be presented in a clear and appropriate way. Furthermore, the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 sets out the need for insurance professionals to use clear and specific language when dealing with consumers.

Lead by Jeff Heasman, this fun and interactive seminar assists participants in being able to identify typical clichés, jargon and archaic words and phrases credible plain English alternatives. It will help insurance professionals to ensure information is accessible to the reader and can be clearly understood.

The ultimate aim is to encourage insurance professionals to switch the focus away from writing to impress their reader and to use plain English in order to express themselves clearly. For example, is there still a place in modern professional communication for words and phrases such as, ‘hereinafter referred to as’, ‘herein’, ‘see attached herewith’, ‘cards on the table approach’, ‘going forward’ and ‘in the pipeline’?
