Being a witness – demystifying the court process

Being involved in a court case can be a confusing and unnerving experience, particularly if you have to give evidence as a witness for the first time. The aim of this interactive seminar is to help anyone who may be asked to give evidence in court to better understand the process. It will also give in-house legal advisers an insight into how their external litigation team can help colleagues in preparing to give evidence at a court hearing.

The session will be led by Christine O’Neill, Chairman of Brodies. Christine has recently been appointed by the Lord Advocate as First Standing Junior to the Scottish Government. She has appeared in the Supreme Court in London, the Court of Session (Scotland’s highest civil court) and Sheriff Courts across Scotland.

• Preparing for the day – what is and isn’t allowed;

• On the day – the layout of the court and etiquette outside and inside the courtroom;

• The role of the witness, the lawyers and the judge in court; and

• Examination in the chief and cross-examination – learn what it is like to be ‘in the witness box’
