⚖️ Living the Code of Ethics – More Than Just Words

A practical look at how we can bring the CII Code of Ethics to life—through everyday behaviours, leading by example and building a positive, professional culture across our institute.

⚖️ Living the Code of Ethics – More Than Just Words

At the Insurance Institute of Halifax and Bradford, we’ve been reflecting on one of the most important themes from NC2026:

👉 Professionalism isn’t just what we know—it’s how we behave.

The CII Code of Ethics sets out clear expectations for all of us in the profession. But let’s be honest—most of us don’t wake up thinking about “codes” and “principles” every day.

So the real question is:

💡 How do we bring the Code of Ethics to life?

👥 It Starts with Everyday Behaviour

The Code is built around core responsibilities like:

  • Acting with integrity
  • Putting clients first
  • Providing a high standard of service
  • Treating people fairly and with respect

But these aren’t just big statements—they show up in small moments:

  • How we speak to colleagues and peers
  • How we behave at events and networking opportunities
  • How inclusive we are in conversations
  • How we respond under pressure

👉 Professionalism is what we do when no one is watching—and especially when everyone is.

🌱 Setting the Standard for the Next Generation

We often talk about attracting new talent into our profession—but what do they see when they arrive?

As experienced professionals, we all influence:

  • The culture they walk into
  • The behaviours they think are “normal”
  • The standards they aim to follow

Whether we realise it or not, we are all: 👉 role models, mentors and ambassadors for the profession

So the question becomes:

💬 Are we showing them the profession we want them to be part of?

🔄 A Reminder for All of Us

The Code of Ethics isn’t just for those starting out—it’s for all of us, at every stage of our career.

It’s easy to assume:

  • “I’ve been doing this years”
  • “I know how to act professionally”

But professionalism evolves, expectations change, and the environments we work in are different to even a few years ago.

👉 Sometimes we all need a reminder—not of the rules, but of the standards we want to uphold

🤝 What This Means for Us as an Institute

As a Local Institute, we have a responsibility to lead by example.

We are committed to ensuring our events and activities are:

  • 🤝 Respectful and welcoming
  • 🌍 Inclusive for all members
  • 🛡️ Safe and professional environments

That’s not just about policies—it’s about creating the right culture together.

✅ Making It Real – What We Can All Do

Living the Code of Ethics doesn’t require big changes—just consistent ones:

  • ✅ Be mindful of how we communicate and include others
  • ✅ Challenge behaviour that doesn’t reflect our standards
  • ✅ Support and encourage new professionals
  • ✅ Lead by example in everyday interactions
  • ✅ Take a moment to reflect: “Would I be proud of this?”

📣 Let’s Keep the Conversation Going

This isn’t about calling anything out—it’s about raising standards together.

Because when we get this right:

  • We strengthen trust in our profession
  • We create better environments for our members
  • And we build something we can all be proud of

💬 What does professionalism mean to you in practice?
