For some, the ultimate tax plan is to leave the country, for others the pull factor is warmer climes, whilst others are simply disaffected by the UK.
We’ll touch on the traps and opportunities from tax and financial planning standpoints regarding living abroad, including the less obvious considerations for returners.
Learning Objectives
Every legal, tax and financial services professional will have clients, friends and even family with overseas interests and connections:
- Those who intend to move overseas or have done so (expats and future expats)
- Those who have arrived in the UK to call it their home (know known as long term residents, or future long term residents) .
- Those with family, property or other wealth overseas.
We will consider / our learning objectives:
- The nuances of the Statutory Residence Test and why day counting is often only part of the picture (including split years, temporary non-residents and exceptional circumstances) .
- The significance in planning with the removal of the concept of ‘domicile’.
- The irreparable consequences of poor timing of financial decisions, commenting on pensions, property and other investments.
