Council member sets summer challenges to raise money for local Autism charity

Charities have felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic due to multiple lockdowns impacting upon fundraising activities. In the last year many sporting activities such as the Great North Run, London Marathon and the Great Swim series were all cancelled due to social distancing requirements. These events are greatly needed to generate sponsorship which directly funds the support and activities that charities offer.

Former Insurance Institute of Middlesbrough President and current Council member Ben McBean, has set himself a number of challenges to raise money for Autism Parents Together (Tees Valley), for which he is also a Trustee.

• The first challenge he has planned is to swim 50km in Open Water (without wetsuit) over June, which equates to 5 marathon swims over the month.
• In July he will take part in Total Warrior (Leeds) on Sunday 11th July. Total Warrior is a 12km obstacle race traversing water, mud, fire and walls.
• He is also planning on cycling from Liverpool to Leeds via the Leeds/Liverpool canal, (date to be decided).

Autism Parents Together (Tees Valley) aims to reduce the social exclusion of people with Autism, by creating exclusive, parent supported, activities to allow the children/young people to participate in activities that they would otherwise be unable to access and meet others with similar experiences. They also arrange for activities for siblings and parents/carers, affording them similar opportunities to take part in activities and meet others.
