Introducing the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman

We are delighted to welcome as our lunch-time speaker for September, Douglas Melville, currently the Principal Ombudsman and Chief Executive of the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman (CIFO).

Douglas is also the chairman of the worldwide International Network of Financial Services Ombudsman Schemes, and has advised internationally on financial consumer protection for the World Bank and others. Until May 2015, he was the ombudsman and chief executive of the Canadian Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments. He qualified as a lawyer in Ontario and became an ombudsman in 2006. Before that, he held senior roles in the banking, investment and insurance industries. He has also served as a board member for various non-profit organisations involved in healthcare, the environment, anti-poverty policy, financial literacy, international development and the performing arts.

  • Attendees will gain an overview of the structure, scope and approach of the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman (CIFO).
  • Attendees will gain insight into how they and their organisations can prepare for CIFO ‘opening' for complaints handling later this year
  • Attendees will learn the information they need to pass to customers regarding CIFO
  • Attendees will learn about the kind of relationship they can expect with the Ombudsman

The talk will take place at Moore's Hotel Wednesday 9 September at 12.30pm, (£10 for members of the Insurance Institute of Guernsey and £12 for non-members, including lunch) Do remember that the attendance fee is payable whether lunch is taken or not. Please feel free to encourage non-member colleagues to attend should this be an area of interest but, please note, members of the Insurance Institute of Guernsey will receive priority in the event of capacity being reached.

Attendance will provide 30 minutes of Structured CPD under the Chartered Insurance Institute's CPD scheme. In booking your place(s) please provide your name, company, confirm if you are a member of the IIG or not, and advise should you require a vegetarian meal. Please note that vegetarian meals need to be pre ordered and cannot be ordered on the day. Should you cancel attendance after 4 September the attendance fee remains payable. If you cannot stay for lunch, it would be appreciated if you can advise us when reserving your place at the lecture.
