Belbin 'Successful Teams' event

CPD Masterclass report by Julie Calvert

What exactly is a team? Do teams matter and why? Do you need a leader?
All questions that were answered by Jo Keeler from Belbin when she joined us to explain how to build successful teams, and it really got us all thinking.
“Simply putting together a number of people and expecting them to work as a team is not enough”. So true. We often know that something is not working within a team but how do we identify what is the issue and how can this be resolved.
In this three hour masterclass, Jo demonstrated different behavioural traits that members of a team might have. We had to identify our “personality” in a team situation. Am I a Shaper, Co-ordinator, Monitor Evaluator, Completer Finisher? At what point in a project should each role be engaged? Which traits follow their head, heart or hand? When can clashes between roles occur?
It was a select group and we had a lot of fun along the way (which included a challenge to write the word “HELP” as a team whilst each pulling ropes and pulleys with a pen in the middle – you had to be there to understand!).
We all came away with lots of new skills which will enable us to improve the make-up of teams we manage and therefore our success as leaders. A big thank you to Jo from Belbin for a great morning session.
