It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Millin has passed away.

Born within the sound of the “kop roar”, John was proud to have been a true scouser. He grew up in Anfield, staying in the city throughout the blitz with his parents, his Father holding a reserved occupation as a dockworker.

After completing National Service with the RAF, John “got his grade” with the LMS (London, Midland, Scottish) Railway and then moved into National Traffic Management at Crosfield’s where he met George Parr.

When George’s Father passed, George took on his own Father’s Insurance Agency and invited John to join him in this “side hustle”. Together they worked evenings and weekends arranging insurances whilst also continuing full time at Crosfield’s. In due course George & John set up on their own, forming Aughton Agencies Ltd based in Ormskirk. George & John split the firm in the early 60s. John took his half to Tulketh Street in Southport - Aughton Agencies (Southport) Ltd and soon after changed the firm’s name to John Millin (Southport) Ltd.

Relocation over the years saw office moves to Post Office Avenue, Southport; a short spell in Crosby; followed by The Common, Parbold and finally to New Street in Mawdesley.

In the 70s/80s John’s three children Andrew, Wendy and Matthew each separately joined their Father in the family firm, where their combined passion for Equestrianism began to influence the direction of the firm. Andrew and Matthew moved their careers from Insurance in to Equestrianism; whereas Wendy started her career in Equestrianism and then joined her Father in Insurance Broking in 1989. This led the brokerage becoming firmly established in its Equestrian Niche as “Millins”.

John always strived to do the right thing. Long before regulation arrived in the Insurance Sector, John was passionate about professionalism and simply doing the right thing. Proud to have never sold an Insurance Policy in his life but to have been gratefully renumerated for giving advice. John supported numerous insurance organisations in the North West, voluntarily followed the ABI Code of Practice and was active in organisations that existed prior to industry regulation, such as the AIIB. Keen to promote professionalism, he was twice Chairman of the Southport Local Committee of The Insurance Institute of Liverpool and the also the First Chairman of the Lancashire Region of the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA). When the Chartered Insurance Institute launched Corporate Chartered Status, he was probably most proud when the firm achieved same in 2008 - Millins Chartered Insurance Brokers.

The family invite all that wish to join in John’s Celebration of a life well lived at 3pm, Monday 1st July at St Peter’s Church, High Street, Mawdesley L40 3TD, followed by a reception at The Red Lion, New Street Mawdesley L40 2QP.
