Essential law of torts for insurance professionals

Overview

This interactive seminar will provide an insight into the fundamental principles of the law of torts relating to the various situations likely to be encountered by insurance professionals, especially those involved in claims handling. It is also aimed at those who may need a knowledge of the law of torts for their CII exams. The main topic areas will include: Negligence: the duty of care, breach of duty, causation and remoteness, occupiers’ liability, product liability, employers’ liability and general defences and remedies in the law of torts.

There will be insurance related scenarios with role play used throughout to aid learning.

Learning objectives

At the end of this event, the delegate will be able to identify:

• the key legal principles of the law of torts typically encountered by those involved in the claims chain in the insurance industry

• the practical application of the key principles of law and how case law can be used to persuade a third party or a customer/client

• areas of the law of torts that are particularly contentious and how to develop arguments when dealing with cases where these areas may arise.

Speaker biography

Jeff Heasman has a postgraduate certificate in English language teaching to adults plus a bachelor and master of laws degree.

He has many years’ experience working within the insurance and legal professions in litigation and liability loss adjusting, having handled litigation up to the Court of Appeal in London and dealt with insurance claims arising from many worldwide jurisdictions.

Jeff has lectured in legal, academic and business English as well as the language of international negotiation at many UK and international universities. He’s delivered training in the law of torts and insurance law and practice to some of the world’s largest and most prestigious organisations.

The Nottingham Insurance Institute charges for non-attendance at all CPD events.

If you do find that you are unable to attend, we ask that you give us at least 4 working days notice that you are no longer able to attend.

Please note, if you fail to let us know before this deadline, we will need to charge a £30.00 (inc. VAT) non-attendance fee to cover the cost of catering, booking arrangements and denial of your place to other members.

All cancellations must be received by email and you will receive confirmation of your cancellation. You may also nominate a replacement if you are unable to attend.
