Harvey's Brewery Tour

The Insurance Institute of Sussex invites you behind the doors of one of England’s most celebrated independent breweries — Harvey’s of Lewes — for a truly unique CPD experience.

Situated at the side of the Ouse, this Grade II* listed building has a history stretching back over 200 years. Your host for the evening will be Miles Jenner, Head Brewer who recently celebrated 40 years at Harvey’s, who will lead you on an exclusive tour of the brewery and its operations.

What makes this evening genuinely distinctive is the insurance lens through which you’ll experience it. Joining Miles will be James Hoad, Property & Casualty Underwriter at Zurich — highlighting exactly what he would consider when assessing a unique risk like this.

From fire suppression in a working brewery to the complexities of insuring a listed building, this is CPD that brings the classroom to life.

Following the tour, you are welcome to try a brief tasting, when we shall then cross the road to The John Harvey Tavern for a short presentation, informal networking, and a buffet.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this event, participants should be able to:

• identify the key physical, operational and heritage risks present within a Grade II* listed commercial premises
• explain how an underwriter assesses and prices risk for a complex, historic manufacturing site
• describe the role of a risk management surveyor and the factors they consider during a site visit
• recognise how building age, construction type and occupancy influence property insurance decisions
• apply risk identification principles to real-world commercial premises within their own client or underwriting portfolios
• understand the interplay between heritage preservation obligations and insurance requirements for listed buildings
  

Getting There
Harvey’s Brewery is located at Bridge Wharf, Lewes, BN7 2AH. Lewes train station is approximately a 10-minute walk. There are good bus links into Lewes town centre, and paid public car parking is available nearby.

Accessibility
Due to the nature of the Grade II* listed brewery and The John Harvey Tavern, there are steep staircases, uneven floors and no lifts. Therefore, this event is unfortunately unable to accommodate people with limited mobility or wheelchair users.
