What is the IIM Professional Development Programme?
Our Professional Development Programme is a series of introductory lectures designed at targeting those new to the insurance industry in Manchester. First launched at the IIM's CPD Masterclass 2014 in association with the IIM’s CPD Committee, the programme will provide attendees with an exclusive insight into the insurance world as a whole.
Primarily aimed at those who are not yet qualified, the programme will offer support to those beginning their studies as well as individuals just looking to get more involved with the CII and strengthen their understanding of the insurance industry.

Many people who work in insurance don’t actually get to know about the insurance principles, and in some cases don’t even know they exist unless they embark upon their insurance exams.
They are the foundation of insurance and have existed for hundreds of years - every day they come into play!
We will look at what they are and why they're important. We will also look at example cases to help us understand how they operate in practice.
In addition delegates will receive a very brief overview of how our industry is regulated (specifically by the Financial Conduct Authority) and understand what can happen if people and firms fall foul of the regulations.
Who should attend? Those new to the insurance industry in Manchester, or not yet qualified.
Learning objectives
At the end of the session delegates will be able to:
- Outline the principles of insurance
- Describe how the principles of insurance operate in practice
- Describe who the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) are
- Discuss how the FCA regulate the market
Speaker biography
Mike has over 40 years experience, working in General Insurance. He has extensive knowledge and expertise of the market in the field of FCA compliance. Mike is a well known, highly respected figure in the insurance market and is a regular contributor to the Insurance press and presents at many Industry events and conferences. He chairs a number of committees for other organisations on Risk Management and Corporate Governance. He is a Fellow of the CII, is past president of the Insurance Institute of Manchester and has recently won the CII service award, and was presented with the IIM Presidents award in 2013.
