Get to Know Your Council - April Release
19 April 2023
Read more about Allen, and find out why he joined the council.

Name: Allen Sweeney

Occupation/Industry Experience:

Hotel Management in London originally, and I then moved to Norwich in 1974 and worked at Sedgwick (now Marsh) until 1978. I then worked as a Loss Adjuster, managing a number of offices (Norwich, Ipswich, Peterborough and Lowestoft) before retiring.
My retirement lasted a month, before I became a funeral director, and still working to this day.

How long have you been on the Insurance Institute of Norwich’s Council?

I joined in 1979/80. I became Chairman of Debating Circle and have been President twice (2001 & 2007)

What is your role, and what does it involve?

My current role is a Life Vice President, discussing with council members how to secure our Local Institute members the necessary lectures, social, networking and annual dinner opportunities. I also am able to provide continued guidance, support and expertise on Local Institute matters/protocol given my long serving tenure.

Why did you decide to join the Council?

In order to expand my interest in the insurance industry and meeting new people and members.

What are you most looking forward to in the forthcoming year on the Council?

I’m looking forward to a continued expansion of the Institute by recruiting new members and providing a broad array of activities.

Tell us one unusual fact about yourself

I believe I hold the record for attending the IIN annual dinners from 1978 – 2019 (43 consecutive years) and 2022. My record was unfortunately disrupted by the pandemic!
