Overview

Derek Adamson, a Partner at DWF LLP and Head of Occupational Health & Casualty, will provide an update on the current legal position regarding mesothelioma claims following the recent Supreme Court decision in the case of Zurich v International

Energy Group.

Learning objectives

At the end of this event, the delegate will be able to identify:

• the law of causation in personal injury claims

• the history of policy coverage in mesothelioma claims arising from the exception to the normal rule of causation

• the ground-breaking nature and practical consequences of the Zurich v IEGL Supreme Court (2015) decision.

Speaker biography

Derek Adamson has more than 37 years’ experience of insurance litigation, winning many major cases and working on landmark decisions. In the past 3 years, Derek has acted successfully for Zurich Insurance PLC in two cases in the UK Supreme Court.

Named as a leader in his field in every Legal 500 and Chambers’ Directory published, and known for many years as the leading defendant personal injury solicitor in the Midlands, he is now renowned nationally and in 2014, gave evidence to the House of Commons Justice Committee regarding mesothelioma claims.

Aside from his mesothelioma work, his policy interpretation work extends into environmental claims, product liability and construction
