An insurers guide to what makes a fair sickness absence procedure in the work place based on recent case law.

We welcome all members & guests to attend a lunch time seminar which will be presented by Jonathan Gray from BDB Pitmans.

Jonathan Gray is an employment law partner at BDB Pitmans. Jonathans employment law specialisms include contracts and policies, recruitment, restructures, all forms of discrimination (including equal pay), dismissal, redundancies, TUPE, collective disputes, data protection (GDPR) and restrictive covenant breaches. Jonathan is also an advocate at the Employment Tribunal, Employment Appeals Tribunal and an accredited employment law and work place mediator. In the Chambers and Partners 2019 edition he was described as Detailed, thorough and well organised, with a great ability to quickly understand what is required and act accordingly.

The insurance sector provides cover for the long term ill health absence of employees and their potential early ill health retirement. There have been a number of recent employment law related case decisions that address issues concerning permanent health insurance, ill health retirement and disability. This presentation aims to provide a summary of the relevant issues raised by these cases and the types of considerations an employer should be making when managing sickness. Getting it wrong can be costly for the employer and not only create a dispute between the employer and employee, but also the insurance/pension provider.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand what is needed for a fair sickness absence procedure in the work place.
