Keynote Speakers & Learning Objectives
Jonathan Gray, Chief Underwriting Officer, Pool Re
Jonathan Gray is the Chief Underwriting Officer for Pool Re having joined in October 2022. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the insurance market and joined Pool Re from Axis Re, where he held the role of President of Global Specialties. Over many years at Axis and Novae (prior to its acquisition), he held increasingly senior positions, including head of Axis’ business at Lloyd’s and head of property reinsurance. Jon’s passionate commitment to insurance and the benefits it offers is instrumental for Pool Re’s focus on increasing the UK’s resilience and returning terrorism risk to the private market.
By the end of this session attendees will:
- Have an appreciation of how terrorist actors have changed their methods and motivations over the past 30 years
- Be aware of terrorists’ current preferred targets
- Appreciate the modern and emerging ideologies that affect the terrorism landscape today
- Have learned how terrorism insurance and reinsurance have evolved over time in response to the changing threat
- Understand Pool Re’s role in providing terrorism reinsurance and supporting wider UK counter-terrorism efforts
Ian Simpson, Founding Partner, Simpson Haugh
Ian Simpson is Co-founding Partner of SimpsonHaugh, an internationally renowned architectural practice established in Manchester in 1987. In the aftermath of the 1996 IRA bombing, SimpsonHaugh was part of the team that won the anonymous international competition to masterplan the city’s reconstruction. The practice went on to design and deliver key projects within the redevelopment area, as well as many of the city’s most notable modern buildings. Ian is the architect behind one of Manchester’s most recognisable landmarks, the Beetham Hilton Tower.

- Understand the historical context and impact of the 1996 IRA bombing in Manchester
- Understand the key strategies used in Manchester’s post-bombing regeneration
- Evaluate the social, economic, and cultural outcomes of the regeneration
- Reflect on lessons learned for urban resilience, sustainability and future city planning
