Stepping Up for the Bubble Foundation

Stepping Up for the Bubble Foundation

Our President Rachel Jefferson Completes the Steptember Challenge! For those of us who spend so much of our working lives sitting at a desk, in the car or in front of clients, Rachel thought Steptember would be a great way to challenge herself to get moving while raising money for such an important cause. So, in September, Rachel took on the Bubble Foundation’s Steptember Challenge: 300,000 steps in 30 days, the equivalent of 10,000 steps per day.

And she did it – finishing the month with an impressive 306,844 steps, with her best day reaching 26,608 steps.

Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

Starting from fewer than 2,000 steps a day, reaching more than 300,000 in a month was no small challenge. Rachel built walking into her daily routine wherever possible, from taking the longer route around the office and walking during phone calls to making evening walks a regular habit.

There were days when energy levels dipped, and a brief spell of illness during a holiday in Rhodes threatened to interrupt her progress. But she kept going, finding opportunities to add steps wherever she could.

Weekends brought the chance to explore further afield, with highlights including walks around Wallington, Beamish, Causey Arch and Blanchland.

One particularly memorable day was a Ramblers walk from The Sill along Hadrian’s Wall. With spectacular Northumberland scenery, glorious sunshine and some challenging climbs and descents, it was a rewarding experience – not least for overcoming some nerves around the heights along the route!

Beyond the steps themselves, the challenge gave Rachel a reason to explore more of the North East, spend time outdoors and build healthier habits into everyday life.

A Challenge With a Bigger Purpose

While completing the challenge was a personal achievement, its real purpose was to support the Bubble Foundation, which helps children with life-threatening immune conditions receiving specialist treatment on Ward 3 at the Great North Children’s Hospital.

The charity provides vital support for children and their families during lengthy and often isolating hospital stays, funding research, equipment, practical and emotional support, and activities that help children enjoy moments of normal childhood during an incredibly difficult time.

Returning home from Rhodes gave Rachel a particularly poignant reminder of why the fundraising mattered.

“It made me think about the families supported by the Bubble Foundation and how much they must long for the day when they can simply go home together. It really put the challenge into perspective. My 300,000 steps were a personal goal, but the challenges these children and families face are on an entirely different level.”

Every Step Counts

Rachel finished September having exceeded her target, discovered new walking routes and established a routine she hopes to continue. But perhaps the greatest reward was the opportunity to give something back to a charity doing such important work.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me throughout the challenge – whether by donating, sharing my fundraising posts, asking how the steps were going or joining me for a walk.

“Every message of encouragement helped me keep going, and every donation will help the Bubble Foundation continue its vital work.”

Rachel’s Steptember Challenge forms part of the Insurance Institute of Newcastle’s commitment to fundraising for and raising awareness of the Bubble Foundation throughout her Presidential year.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, shared, encouraged and stepped up to support the challenge. Your generosity will help make a real difference to children and families when they need it most. 💙🫧
