WEBINAR: - How Liability can Arise in Tort

  • Tue 11 May 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
    • Alan Chandler

We sell many different liability insurance policies to customers every day; Motor, Employers Liability, Public Liability, Products liability, D&O, Professional Indemnity, Cyber Liability and more - what are we protecting the customers against, well it is largely being protected against being sued in the law of tort. Therefore, brokers, underwriters and claims staff alike should understand the law of tort, as failure to understand this means protections may be inadequate and a fair presentation of risk may not occur.

Annual General Meeting 2021

  • Wed 05 May 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Our local institute council will be holding its annual general meeting at the time and date shown. This year, with the ongoing caution brought about by the need to avoid large gatherings etc, we intend to organize a virtual meeting. If any member of the Nottingham Insurance Institute wishes to join the council or would like to chat with someone about what this would involve, please contact our Secretary, Andrew Fennell email at : andrew.fennell@successionwealth.co.uk. We run a series of CPD events, sports and social events, organize and co-ordinate the exam activity in the area as well as celebrating all of our member’s achievements at the annual dinner, which is held in January each year. We can only do all of this thanks to the great efforts of every member of council. We are always looking for new people and new ideas. Have you considered joining your local council? We have people on our council from the General Insurance and Financial Services sides of the CII, as well as representatives from the legal profession and our strength is in the diverse and committed team who work well together. If you would like to join council or attend the AGM, all you need to do is contact Andrew for details. It’s a great chance for you to bring new ideas and energy to the party!

Anxiety Adjusted Returns

  • Thu 11 Mar 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm
    • Greg B Davies, PhD, Oxford Risk

In all decisions poor decisions arise from the tension between the ‘sensible’ decision for long-term financial needs, and the ‘emotionally comfortable’ decision in the short term. This need for emotional comfort means that investors continually deviate from good financial decisions, at the cost of financial returns - for investments this can cost on average 3% per year over time (and this is without considering other financial decisions: savings, debt, insurance etc.). Improving decision-making requires moving towards a better trade-off between optimal and comfortable… finding a cheaper way of buying the emotional comfort that we all need. There are many ways of narrowing the gap, making investors more comfortable with better investment solutions … but to do this well requires understand each individual investor's unique financial personality. This has particular resonance in regard to both Covid, and the rise in retail day-trading … both exacerbate the emotional component of decision making and raise the chances of very costly bad decisions. Decision prosthetics can help guide people more consistently to better decisions.

Planning for the next generation using Pensions

  • Wed 24 Feb 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
    • John Chew, Canada Life

To quote from the Blue Oyster Cult song lyrics, “Don’t fear the reaper”. An essential part of the advisers role is the planning the steps taken to protect your clients estate. Since the introduction of pension freedoms and the increased flexibility and choice open to clients and whom can benefit from their remaining pension pot, this has become even more important when planning how wealth is cascaded. However, there are things that can be done today with pensions to help spread the wealth at an earlier point in time whilst providing valuable tax savings for your clients. The session will examine ways of using pensions contributions to benefit others along with considerations around the lifetime allowances and the outcomes of the recent Staveley case with respect to pension transfers within two years of death.
