How Secure Is Business Messaging? Understanding Encryption in Practice

This session by Jeff Heasman and Dr Joe Whittaker provides an insight into how secure encrypted messaging is and the privacy implications of usage in a business setting. With the increased use of Whatsapp and other messaging software in a business setting its important to understand where your data is going, what can, and cannot, be seen.
This webinar introduces end-to-end encryption (E2EE), explaining how messages are encrypted on a sender’s device and decrypted only on the recipient’s device.
It explores what service providers can and cannot see, clarifying the distinction between encrypted message content and unencrypted metadata. The session compares how major messaging apps implement E2EE, highlighting differences in default settings, key management, backups, and additional security features. Real-world examples will be used to show how these design choices affect privacy, usability, and trust.
An interesting subject useful for both CII and PFS members providing an insight in a business setting but implications within everyone's private life as well.
