President's Message - October 2020

I love dusting off my coat, jumpers and boots, as well as purchasing a new hot chocolate from Whittards ready for those cosy nights in. I am ready to start using the ‘C’ word from September, but this is strictly banned in our house until after Halloween.

As we approach the colder, darker months it may not feel as easy to work from home as it did while the sun was shining, and we could enjoy long summer walks. I urge you to look after yourselves and each other as we continue to follow government guidelines and keep each other safe.

I would like to draw your attention to our ‘Mental Health Reboot; Coffee, Connection & Calm’ sessions. This is our monthly social to support you throughout the last quarter of 2020, in collaboration with our neighbouring institutes.

Learning Objectives

‘The Mental Health Reboot’ is your opportunity to:

  1. Develop positive psychology techniques to help with anxiety, stress, and low mood.
  2. Meet and build relationships with new people.
  3. Benefit from incredibly powerful guided meditations with a trained expert.

We held the first session two weeks ago, and on the last Friday in October and November we will be continuing ‘The Mental Health Reboot’ from 10 until 11am. This three-part reboot is open to all. For more information please visit our website.

Fabba Theatre Group

My President’s Charity for the year is The Fabba Theatre Group in Norfolk and Suffolk. The self-funded group supports individuals with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, autism, and mental health needs. They focus on progressing their members in all aspects of performance including voice projection, improvisation, emotion and communicating effectively, which provides focus and structure.

They have limited resources for staging, costumes, and transport. Any contribution would make such a difference to an important cause; as many of you will know, there is a severe lack of this type of support and development within our region, which has been made worse by the ongoing global situation.

Why is this important to me?

My younger sister Dani (short for Danielle, but I cannot remember the last time I used her full name), is part of Fabba and from the photo you can tell how much she loves it. Dani has always struggled with speech and speaks in a whisper most of the time. Fabba encourages her to keep developing her voice projection and she absolutely loves meeting up with the other members of the group. She tells me I am her best friend and I would love to give something back to a cause that I know she loves.
