It is an honour and a privilege to be elected President for the Chartered Insurance Institute of Newcastle upon Tyne for the 2020-21 year. The institute dates back to 1896, and continues to be well supported and thriving with a dedicated team of volunteers on council that provide many years of experience. I have been on council since 2011, most recently taken the role as Charities Officer for a number of years.
I began my career in general insurance with Guardian Royal Exchange back in 1985, needless to say the industry has seen many changes since then!
My theme for my presidential year is communication, perhaps even more relevant in the current situation we find ourselves in. My aim is to carry on the good work of previous Presidents to help bridge the gap between PFS and GI, but also to work closer with other Institutes which are our “neighbours” such as Middlesborough, York and Carlisle. I’m sure there are ideas we can share and use the knowledge and experience that these other Councils will have.
We are very fortunate to have such an active council as well as a growing Young Professional Group. It goes without saying we have to thank all those individuals that give up their own time to organise meetings and events such as our annual quiz, five-a-side football, golf days and of course our annual dinner. Without them, the Newcastle Institute wouldn’t be what it is today.
My chosen charity for the year is a small organisation local to me, Contact (Morpeth Mental Health Group) Ltd. Established over 25 years ago, they provide a range of services to the local community covering issues such as bereavement, drug and alcohol misuse, low confidence and self-esteem. As is often the case, they are dependent on charitable donations to continue their great work. Please see this link to website to find out more about them:
We run an active programme of interesting and relevant educational events throughout the year and I would welcome and also encourage you to attend these. It is a great chance to network, learn and of course build up CPD points. Even at the current time, we are running webinars, so please look out for invitations to attend these.
I look forward to supporting and representing our Members this year.
