IIC&G is delighted to welcome Tom Flatau, International Speaker and Coach to deliver the 3rd of 3 webinars around leadership in the workplace.

85% of executives cite change as critical to business success. Yet all too often it is seen as a threat. If change is so vital, why are people afraid of it?

Quite simply, it’s our subconscious biases protecting the status quo and our tendency to emphasise the negative at the expense of the positive – negativity bias. Change creates winners and losers and the fear of loss looms larger than gain. Yet we all have the ultimate tool for change at our disposal… our brain!

Neuroplasticity – our natural ability to change
The fundamental architecture of the brain is to change and adapt. Humans can adapt to any habitat on the planet from the Poles to the Equator. Think also of the languages we may have to learn depending on where we are born. The neurobiology behind this is our brain’s remarkable ability to re-wire itself to cope with changing circumstances. When we learn or experience something new, thousands of neurons wire together to map this new knowledge.

Changing mindset
Leaders need to know how to engage the part of their people’s brain that triggers curiosity, excitement and change-readiness. This means an experimentation and strengths-based approach.
People need to understand the purpose of the change. The why needs clear communication. Traditional approaches to change have been about creating fear (the stick approach). Today it is about creating insight and excitement (the carrot approach).
We also introduce delegates to various change models and help them understand the pros and cons of each.
